New Scout Campout

Hi Troop 20 Scouts and Scouters.

This note is to provide you with some details about the upcoming New Scout Campout on April 15, 16, and 17th at Moraine View.  I’ll be providing more details in the next weeks, but wanted to get you the basics.

Monday, April 11 at troop meeting – plan menu

Thursday, April 14

7:00pm – Scouts shop for campout food at Aldis (East side, on Veterans).  Class A’s.  Should take about an hour.

Friday, April 15      

  • 5:00pm – Older scouts meet at old airport.  They should eat dinner prior and wear class A uniforms.  Permission slips will be required.  Request to Administer Medication Forms (see downloadable form at bottom of this page) required if scout requires any medications.  (I will bring copies of permission slips to the 4/13 troop meeting and the old airport on 4/17.)
  • 5:30pm – The bus will leave the old airport
  • 6:00pm – Arrive at the Moraine View State Park.  We will be in one of the Timber Ridge Group Campsites.
  • Remainder of evening – Set up camp, do a cracker barrel
  • 10:00-ish – lights out

Saturday April 16

  • 7:00am – Older scouts wake up, make breakfast, and cleanup
  • 8:00am – New scouts meet at old airport at 8:00am.  They should eat breakfast prior and wear class A uniforms.  Permission slips will be required.  (I will bring copies to the 4/11 troop meeting and the old airport on 4/15.)
  • 8:30am – The bus will leave the old airport
  • 9:00am – Arrive at the Moraine View State Park.
  • 9:00am to 11:00am  – New Scouts set up camp with help of older scouts
  • 11:30am – 1:00pm – Lunch – Older scouts work with new scouts to teach them how to prepare, serve, and cleanup after lunch.
  • 1:00pm – 3:00pm – Older scouts work with new scouts at several stations to teach them boy scout camping skills – building and tending a fire, using a lightweight stove (Fireman Chit).  Using a knife, ax, saw safely (Totin’ Chip). Using a map and compass
  • 3:00pm – 4:00pm – Older scouts work with new scouts on advancement requirements.
  • 4:00pm – 5:00pm – Free time
  • 5:00pm – 7:00pm – Scouts make dinner, eat, cleanup
  • 7:00pm – 8:00pm – More work on advancement requirements.
  • 8:00pm – 10:00-ish – campfire, cracker barrel
  • 10:00-ish – lights out
  • (Sometime during the day, I’d also like to sneak in a 5 mile hike for our Philmont crew.  I will work with them on the time.)
  • Sunday April 17

7:00am – Scouts wake up, tear down camp, eat cold breakfast, and cleanup

Between 10:00 and 10:30 – depart Moraine View State Park

11:00 at the latest – arrive old airport.  We will have scouts call parents to let them know if we will be earlier than 11:00.  Unload and clean bus, divvy up remaining food, dismiss.

What to Bring:

  • Scout Book
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Sleeping Pad
  • Mess kit (plate, cup, silverware)
  • Water Bottle
  • Snack to share at Cracker Barrel
  • Flashlight
  • Two pairs of shoes (wear one to campout, pack another.  at least one pair of hiking boots.)
  • Clothing, coats, hats, gloves appropriate for the weather.  We camp and stick to our agenda, rain, cold or shine!  I’m hoping for snow!
  • Medicines (These must be turned in to a Scout Leader at old airport prior to departure for camp.)
  • Camp chair (optional)

Troop provides tents.

Fees:

$15.  Please work with Mrs. Bowling regarding payment.

Other items:

  • If a scout has signed up for the trip but doesn’t show up and doesn’t give trip leader notice prior to buying food, he will still be charged for the trip.
  • All meds must be given to trip leader prior to departure
  • Please advise trip leader of any special dietary needs, allergies
  • Electronic devises (cell phones, etc) are allowed on the bus to and from camp, but must be left on bus while at campsite.
  • If you need to contact your scout, please call the one of the adult leaders on the campout.
